TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY

From 15 July 2026

ALBERTINA MUSEUM, VIENNA

This exhibition revolves around travel and expedition photography during the 19th century, a period in which the still-new medium of photography was seeing more and more use as a means of depicting the world. Cultural, political, and entrepreneurial motives gave rise to series of images that told of industrialization, the expansion of mobility, shifting claims to power, and the exploration of less-known landscapes.

These impressive works sweep us along to the icy heights of the Alps, to the Middle East’s ancient sites, to remote regions of the Habsburg Empire, and to far-off lands such as Japan. The exhibited photographs will be drawn from the ALBERTINA Museum’s multifaceted collection.

The exhibition is on view from 15 July until 26 October 2026.
