ALBERTINA MODERN, VIENNA

Paintings of monumental beauty and power convey history and knowledge passed down through many generations: the works of Emily Kame Kngwarreye (1910–1996) embody detailed knowledge of the land of her ancestors. As probably the best-known protagonist of Australian First Nations art, she began painting only in her late 70s and spent the following eight years until her death creating a wide-ranging body of works that stand at the center of this exhibition of artists from Australia.

The selection draws upon the ALBERTINA Museum’s extensive holdings of this type, which encompass around 100 artistic approaches and were most recently augmented by a donation from the collecting couple Elisabeth Bähr and Lindsay Frost in honor of of the museum’s 250th anniversary. Works by Australian women photographers such as Destiny Deacon and Tracey Moffatt round out this presentation of art from down under.

On view from 24 November 2026 to 2 May 2027 at the ALBERTINA MODERN.
