ALBERTINA MODERN, VIENNA

The ALBERTINA Museum is mounting its first-ever exhibition on the theme of dance photography, with works drawn entirely from the museum’s own extensive collection. These photographs show how expression, rhythm, and motion were transformed into fascinating images. The spectrum ranges from 1860s ballet portraits to snapshots of free dance from around 1900 and on to avant-garde photography of the 1920s and ’30s.

The photographers behind these images exploited new technical possibilities and introduced modern stylistic approaches. A special emphasis will be placed here on Vienna, where the initial years of the 20th century saw a lively independent scene redefine dance as an art form.

The exhibition is on view at the ALBERTINA MODERN Museum from 3 March until 7 June 2026.
